July 5 and 6 represent successive holidays commemorating two corner stone events of Czech history and myth. They are successively the brining of literacy to the Czech lands (or Great Moravia) by Cyril and Methodius in 863 and the burning for heresy of the Czech reform priest Jan Hus in 1415. Both events are amply described around the internet including YouTube.

The first of May was traditionally marked as the "day for lovers," with couples flocking to Petřín Hill to meet near Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha's statue or kiss underneath a cherry tree, ensuring good health and luck for the year. After the end of communism, global commercialism made its mark and brought with it Western traditions. Although Valentine's Day is not nearly as popular as in Western countries, its popularity is increasing, leaving a trail of rose petals in its wake. The Czech Republic has the third highest marriage rate in the world, falling behind Russia and the US with 8.4 marriages per 1,000 people according to nationmaster.com, but with a divorce rate of 67%, finding a long-lasting Valentine may be difficult. However, with Valentine's Day on a Saturday, the possibilities to woo your mate are seemingly endless, and restaurants and theaters around Prague are offering romantic and fun ideas to make even a forgotten holiday memorable.
EU Skeptic Ideologue Praises 'Courageous' Czechs in a Newspaper that Once Supported Hitler's Annexation

Prominent UK right-winger, Peter Hitchens lays out the involved history of the Czech land in a typically tendentiously deranged piece of writing in the Daily Mail, a newspaper once vocal in its support of Mussolini, Hitler and the annexation of Czechoslovakia. Today, Hitchens has the gall to go to Prague and pretend that Czechs are the only thing standing in the way of totalitarian rule from Brussels. At every turn, he dips into any available pocket of intellectual dishonesty to deliver his predictably venomous anti-EU diatribe.

PETER HITCHENS: How the Czechs are fighting the marshmallow EU tyrant | Mail Online All the great conflicts of Europe have swept violently through this dark, beautiful and sinister city.

Image via Wikipedia

It is entertaining that Hitchens brings his bile to bear even on the matter of his visual perception. Today's Prague is anything but dark or sinister. Full of brightly-colored buildings and artificially lit up at night, it is the closest thing you can find to a Disneyland without paying an entrance fee. But worse is yet to come.

The Second World War can be said to have started here, with Hitler's first occupation of a non-German capital, in March 1939. Many of the battles of the Cold War left blood on the cobblestones.

Now another great struggle - between the European superstate and the very idea of national independence - is being fought in Prague.

To compare Nazi occupation with EU membership would be hilarious if it wasn't so nausiatingly inappropriate coming from someone whose countrymen were once instrumental in letting Hitler have his way with Czechoslovakia's independence and then proceeded 6 years later to allow Stalin draw the line of influence just west of Prague.

You might call it the Battle Of The Flag. Look up at the majestic castle on its hill and you can just see it, proud on its solitary staff.

It is the personal standard of President Vaclav Klaus, a rather lovely piece of Continental blazonry with the fine motto 'Truth Prevails' inscribed upon it.

Every other official building in the city flies the dreary European Union dishcloth - but not the castle. Why ever not?

Well the answer is simple, president Klaus, the Thatcherite Eurosceptic populist who travels the world lecturing world leaders on the 'myth' of global warming doesn't like the EU. It is not surprising that Hitchens would feel an affinity with this man who is considered by many to be an embarrasment for the country and maintains his popularity by rabid nationalism. But most Czechs are genuinely proud of their EU presidency and have always seen EU membership as the accomplishment of their struggle for freedom rather than a threat to their independence. They like Klaus' blowhard posturing but would be violently opposed to the consequences of his foreign policy ideas. Hitchens latches onto Klaus' supposed heroism like a right-wing limpet citing Klaus's meaningless mantras like 'But it is post-democracy, really, that rules the EU.'

And post-democracy is not democracy - Czechs are especially good at spotting the difference between the real thing and counterfeits, having been told under communism that they lived in a 'democracy' when they most certainly didn't.

Yes, Czechs are good at spotting the difference and that's why they don't think the current situation is anything like the communist rule. Some might succumb to regionalist nationalism but those sentiments are just as imported as their purported democratic ideals. Hitchens sucks up to KIaus' adviser Mach:

'Democracy cannot work in a supranational state,' Mach explains. 'We feel we must permanently fight for our freedom and national sovereignty. This fight is never won for ever.'

Well, this is nonsense. I'm constantly amazed how thoroughly ignorant the EU haters are of the situation in the US which is much more of a supranational state than people admit - deceived by English as the prevailing medium of communication. How about the issues of 'states' rights' in the US, different customs, traditions, extradition laws, speed limits, death penalty, and so on? We don't see it from over here, but the US is much more like the EU than it might seem. But Hitchens in all his patronising splendour sees the fact that there is no border check on his train ride from Berlin to Prague (widely applauded by all Czechs) as a signal that the end is near:

And so it is that for the fourth time in a century, the poor Czechs are about to see their independence snuffed out because it is inconvenient to greater powers in a vast continental scheme.

Repeatedly invaded, occupied, suppressed, Germanised one year, Russified the next, their survival is amazing. But the threat of absorption into an EU superstate menaces the Czechs, perhaps more permanently than before.

This 'menace' is only real in as much as it will deprive Hitchens of a country to safely ignore until he needs to make another tendentiously predictable point. As part of the EU, the Czechs have much more of a say than they ever did and are safer from takeover than they were in 1939, and 1948 and 1968 when the likes of Hitchens in the West were advocating throwing us to the wolves as an acceptable sacrifice.

The sticky, marshmallow bonds of the EU are obviously not the iron shackles of the old dictators. But they are bonds all the same, and once they are in place, the Czechs will have little to distinguish them from their neighbours apart from their beer, their literature, their music and their complex language.

From having been a country, they will become a regional oddity in a state called Europe.

Perhaps we should remind Hitchens of the words of his compatriots like Shakspeare who ascribed a coast to the landlocked Bohemia and Neville Chamberlain who refused to care about a 'far away country' of which he 'knew little' and cared less. The truth is, since about the mid 1400s, Czech have been a regional oddity in Europe distinguished from the rest by 'beer, literature, music and language' and they know it. In fact, they're pretty proud of that. The EU can hardly make it worse but it has the potential to give them a voice - like these six months of EU presidency or the hosting of NATO summits - that they would have previously been denied. Hitchens living in a country deriving much of its relevance from its morally ambiguous colonial past doesn't see that it is separatism that starts the slide into irrelevance not being part of a bigger whole.

We may imagine that this fate will not overtake us, safe as we foolishly think we are beyond the Channel. But, as happened once before, the fate of the Czechs is inextricably linked with our own.

Their courage alone cannot save us. But if we showed some backbone, we might save them, and ourselves as well.

Well, Peter, good luck! But please next time use your own country to weave your metaphors of EU doom. Or at least have the decency to start with an apology for the role your land and newspaper have played in our 'dark' history you're so eager for us not to repeat. As it is, the Czechs as nation collectively wish you had 'showed some backbone' 70, 60 and again 40 years ago and saved us from some real threats. Being patronised through faint praise today is hardly going to make up for it.

Lost in translation: Prudish Washington Post journalist mistranslates spa, has time of her life in Karlovy Vary

A slender blonde sitting next to me on a bench in Karlovy Vary's Spa III got up, tossed off the white sheet she was wearing and jumped naked into a pool 20 feet away. I sat there, paralyzed, wondering how to discreetly grab my clothes and find an exit.

Image via Wikipedia

I was more than a little amused reading this article on the Czech spa town Karlovy Vary in the Washington Post. First, the opening paragraph shows nicely how different the European and American sense of modesty is. There is nothing peculiar for two Czechs of the same gender to see each other in the nude. Americans seem to engage in a much more intricate dance of modesty.

But even more enteretaining was the way the article contrasted two experiences based simply on a mistranslation of the word 'spa' or ' lázně'. In Czech, the word only has medicinal, curative connotations (as it presumably did in English not so long ago, too). You do to a spa for healing not for a day of beauty of treatments. That's why the idea of a 'day spa' is simply not available. A visit to a spa that lasts less than a week sounds strange. Sure you can even be treated in a spa as an 'outpatient' but you will still receive a whole treatment - not surprisingly called 'kůra' (cf. cure). Sure, spas are also a place to socialise but that means getting to know your fellow patients, not to go for a relaxing day out with your friends. In that light, much of what she talks about in the article makes relatively little sense. If the author began by saying 'In Czech the word for spa, means something slightly different' she would have avoided looking rather foolish.

However, in the end, Mary Ellen Monahan had a good time and provided her readers with lots of useful information about a wonderful place to visit. Of course, there are many 'spa towns' in the Czech Republic that would provide just as enjoyable an experience with more authentic Czech feel and a lot fewer Russian nouveaux riche. To name just a few Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně, Poděbrady, or Lázně Libverda will all repay a visit.

But Dana Vávrová's best known film the 1976 'Ať žijí duchové' (Long live the ghosts) certainly stands among the best in children's cinemas as do many other creations of that era. Also typical of that generation, Vávrová emigrated to the then West Germany where she became a successful actress and director.

Czech drinking habits revealed

1 in 10 Czechs drink like fish, 1 in 10 are teetotallers and the rest have the occasional tipple adding up to 10 liters of pure booze per head per year. All that and more was revealed by a recent survey.

Poll: 14% of Czechs cannot do without alcohol | Prague Daily Monitor Prague, Jan 23 (CTK) - Some 14 percent of Czechs, men more often than women, cannot imagine their life without a glass of alcohol, according to a poll conducted by the Median agency and released to CTK Friday.

The "Alcohol and Czechs" poll shows that alcohol is a common part of life for 62 percent of respondents, while young people aged 20-29 prevail in the group with "a positive approach to alcohol."

The Median study also shows that 65 percent of the polled can imagine living without alcohol and 18 percent are undecided in this respect.

Only 11 percent of respondents do not consider alcohol a common part of lifestyle.

A total of 10.2 litres of pure alcohol per capita is annually consumed in the Czech Republic.

Czech Language Institute, the guardian of Czech language usage guidelines, made available a wonderful online resource on http://prirucka.ujc.cas.cz. It's targeted at Czechs, thus the interface and many of the grammatical explanations are in Czech but even beginner learners can take advantage of the search. Just type in any word in any form, click [Hledej] and get a full listing of its other forms as in the picture below.

An interesting article from 1939's Telegraph appeared giving us a glimpse of Czech history at a painful moment in the country's memory as it was casually described by the British press little realising that it was but the first step on the way to the invasion of Britain.

Czech plan for 10,000 refugees - Jan 5, 1939 - Telegraph Ten thousand refugees from Germany, Austria and the Sudeten areas are to leave Czechoslovakia in the near future. The emigration will be largely financed out of the British £10,000,000 loan to Czechoslovakia.

Scottish Harvest in Bohemia Wins BCSA Prize

From a BCSA press release:

A Scottish Harvest in Bohemia – Edwin Muir’s Return to Hope is the title of an essay that has just won a prize of £300 in a writing competition run by the British Czech & Slovak Association. The author is Clarice Cloutier.

The essay is an analysis of two beautiful and thoughtful poems, set in the Bohemian countryside, by the Scottish poet Edwin Muir. Muir, from Orkney, wrote Autumn in Praguewhile staying in the new state of Czechoslovakia between 1923 and 1925, and The Cloud while serving as Director of the British Council in Prague in the turbulent period from 1946 to 1949. The essay studies his style and evocative imagery and suggests the deeper meanings underneath.

Clarice has studied at Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Oxford and Charles Universities. She lives in Prague, where she currently teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on Central European literature and culture. She has won the Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Prize for Slavic Studies, and has compiled, translated and edited (with her colleague Bronislava Volková) a dual language selection of 65 Czech poets, Up the Devil’s Back: An Anthology of 20th Century Czech Poetry, to be published in the USA in December 2008.

Czech Republic Enters the Year Presiding over the EU

Nobody described the challenges ahead than Radio Netherlands:

International news - Radio Netherlands Worldwide - English

www.radionetherlands.nl/news/international/6117...

The Czech Republic has taken over the presidency of the European Union from France today. Paris handed over a number of difficult issues to Prague including the economic crisis, the recently signed climate agreement and the latest violence between Israel and Hamas. Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg will travel to the Middle East to mediate between the two sides in the next few days.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus is a well-known euro-skeptic, but real power lies with Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek. The Czech Republic is one of the three EU member states that has not yet ratified the Treaty of Lisbon reforming the Union. Belgium and Ireland are the other two. Sweden will take over the EU presidency on 1 July.

Books by Čapek out of copyright on 70th anniversary of his death

The title says it all really! Thanks to the people at the MobileRead forums. I assume this only applies to his works in Czech rather than the English translations which are more recent and carry their own copyright.

Books by Karel Capek are out of copyright from today - MobileRead Forums One of the greatest Czech authors Karel Capek (properly spelled Karel Čapek) has died exactly 70 years ago and the information about his books going to the Public Domain have even made news in the main evening news program.

He was most famous for his Science Fiction books long before the Science Fiction became an established genere. He was the very first person to write about robots. The very word ROBOT was invented by Mr. Karel Capek in his play "Rosum's Universal Robots".(**)

He also wrote books for children that are still very popular, detective stories, novels, fairy tales and theatre plays

So now, I can safely post link that has two links to his books
R.U.R. - Rossum's Universal Robots (1920)
and
The War With The Newts (Valka s mloky) (1936)

Learn multiple Slavic languages at once with NiceTranslator

Nicetranslator.com uses the Google Translate service to give instant response as you type and you can even choose multiple languages at once including Slovak, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, or Croatian. This could be useful for students of Slavonic languages in general but it also shows bits of sentences as you type them in. For instance, when you're typing in 'I remember', you see the appropriate Czech 'Vzpomínám si' and when you add 'you' to make it 'I remember you', the phrase changes to 'Pamatuju si tě' - again the right word for the context. Pretty impressive! But unfortunately, it's not reliable. Simple phrases like 'How do I get to the train station' are mistranslated (eventhough still intelligible to a Czech). So not perfect but a decent start.

Google Announces Czech<->English dictionary - Best Online Tool Yet for Learners

Google just released a Czech/English - English/Czech http://www.google.cz/dictionary that is the best online tool I've seen for learners. It offers examples in context, English definitions, and for some common words like bread even pictures (although not pictures of the culturally appropriate pictures - the bread is not what typically Czech bread looks like).

For transltion work, I'd still go to http://www.slovnik.cz which offers many more alternatives but not context and explanations (so you basically have to know what the word means already to make it possible to choose the right equivalent).

Google struggling to translate 'friends' into Czech

According to Zive.cz, Google.cz is asking the Czech internet community how they would like to translate the now ubiquitous word 'friend' into Czech. This is a real problem. There are two basic words for friend in Czech 'přítel/přítelkyně' or 'kamarád/kamarádka' (with different forms for male/female). 'Kamarád' is a general friend (more of a buddy) and in some contexts considered less formal while 'přítel/přítelkyně' would be used in more formal language and would mean 'boy/girl friend' when used of somebody of the opposite sex. But both these words actually mean something closer to what English would refer to as 'close personal friend' - the kind of friend depicted in the sitcom 'Friends' but not the kind of friend you acquire on Facebook in the hundreds. For those friends, Czech reserves the word 'známý/známá'. But that would be very impersonal for most contexts so classifying your real friends as that on a social network would be tantamount to an insult.

There are two possible solutions. 1. Forget about the fake 'friend' and just use the generic 'kontakt'. 2. The whole social web world could take a lesson from Czech and divide friends into two kinds 'personal friends' and 'internet friends'. Facebook already does that with the 'Friend/Fan' distinction but I think many people would appreciate it to be able to have friends with whom they share more info than with others.

Google Czech live long, Google Prague, get rich

Resuming Czblogging after a hiatus with the amazing news that simply Googling Czech can have beneficial consequences. A new Google mashup StateStats shows correlations between US states' socioeconomic characteristics and the frequency of particular search terms originating from those terms.

And wouldn't you know it? Searching for the word 'Czech' strongly correlates with life expectancy and negatively with child mortality and illiteracy. Not surprisingly the most Czech-eager states are Nebraska, Iowa, District of Columbia, New York, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota.

Searching for Prague, correlates positively with income and negatively with obesity and suicide. For some reason, Minnesotans lead the Prague-searching league.

(On a personal note, searching for my first name correlates with density. Is that a hint?)

Czech president sulky over same sex unions

For an atheist and reasonably liberal country, same-sex unions are having a tough time in the Czech Republic. Finally, a new laws gives some rights to same-sex couples but it sent the president Václav Klaus into a tizzy. The president, as always happy to bolster his typical opportunistic populism with inherent homophobia, decided to signal his opposition by not signing the bill. Which under Czech constitution means simply that it becomes law. So now the questions is did he show principled opposition or just demonstrate that Czech presidents don't really matter?

Klaus refuses to sign amendment to same sex law - Czechnews - Aktuálně.cz "The president believes that while the state has many reasons to grant privileges and exemptions to a married couple, there are no reasons to do the same with same sex couples," he added.

The amendment links law on registered partnership approved in 2006 with other laws that are related to it, such as law on ID cards, aid in material need and on birth registers.
...

Gay and Lesbian League representative Martin Strachoň reacted to the president's message:

"President Klaus has let us know again that a gay or lesbian partnership is an eyesore for him. Nevertheless, this law is only about adjusting some practical aspects, so there is no reason to declare disapproval in such a sulking way. However, Klaus probably understands that it would be narrow-minded to veto the law again and therefore he leaves it unsigned," Strachoň told Aktuálně.cz.

Czech animation reviving rich history

Czechs have always been on the cutting edge of animation (even helping with some of the Tom and Jerry cartoons in the 1950s and 1960s) and now it seems, things are looking up again, as this short article in Variety suggests. The name from the past to take note of is Jan Švankmajer who's cited as an influence on Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam.

Czech animation undergoing revival - Entertainment News, Central Europe/Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Fest, Media - Variety Whether weird, provocative or simply a national calling card, animation Czech-style is undergoing a renaissance, with at least 10 features slated to bow throughout the next year.
